The pipe used to line the borehole—the actual hole drilled into the ground to access the oil, is known as the casing. It also experiences axial tension, just like the drill pipe does. It varies, though, in that in addition to the external pressure from the rock and silt it has been bored into, there is also inside pressure from the oil itself.
